Songwriting Habit - Chords & Rhythm

Developing a strong rhythmic pattern with your chord structure can help lay a solid foundation for your song. Rhythm gives your song direction and an overall sound that you can build upon. It also gives the listener an understanding of who you are through it’s stylistic sound.

Here are three examples using two chords C and G.

Example 1: Played on the electric guitar with a blues type of feel.

Example 2: A simple strumming pattern played on the electric guitar.

Example 3. A rocky riff sound played on the electric guitar.

Theses three examples are very different in sound yet are playing the same two chords. So when you are developing your own chord structure for your song, consider the rhythm and overall sound that you want to produce. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple strumming patterns or riffs always work, and they establish a style that reflects you.
