Songwriting Habits - Your Connection through Music

Creating music helps us connect to our thoughts and emotions. For some  of us who find talking about stuff difficult, writing music is a satisfying avenue to express ourselves. By sitting down and playing with different sounds we give ourselves some time to truly connect with who we are. It is in these moments that true creativity takes place, leaving us feeling like we have said something, something through music.

So how can we do this? Try:

1. Sitting down at the keyboard or with a guitar and choose some chords to play around with.

2. Experiment with how you can strum, pick, use broken chords (piano) really listening to the sound you are creating...

3. Try playing these chords with different rhythms..

3. Do this eveyrday until you are happy with the sound.

4. Record it on your phone, it might become the start of your new song.

For those people who say they can't play an instrument try using:

5. Garage Band. It is a great way for beginner song writers to experiment with creating sounds  by dragging in loops from the browser. Try choosing a guitar loop or piano loop that you like.

Or....

6. Garage Band on the iPad. Try experimenting with the chords available in keyboards by tapping the chord strips.
